Scaling Up MDM Architecture

Scaling Up MDM Architecture

It seems to be common sense that you should consider scaling up MDM architecture as your 1:1 grows. However, it took us a little longer than expected to move this direction. My shop currently uses the Casper Suite by JAMF Software. It does a really good job, but like anything, it gets hungry for more resources as it grows. We currently manage over 9,000 iOS devices and about 500 assorted MacBooks. Our MDM is running on a single Windows VM. Most days it works…

Make Cute Custom Icons in OS X

Make Cute Custom Icons in OS X

Custom Icons You Can Make in OS X “How do I make cute, custom icons for web shortcuts or folders on my MacBook?” This question actually comes up quite a bit. Though it is a simple process, it does require that you do certain steps in order. Managing and Cleaning Out Storage on Your iPhone or iPad

Managing storage on an iOS device can seem tricky at times especially when you get notifications that iCloud is getting full and/or try to do an update only to have it stopped because you do not have enough free space. Saving Your Data: A Tale of Three Kitties As the EdTech dude, almost everyone I talk to agrees that it would be horrible if they lost all their data on the computer. Most people have actually experienced this crisis, vowing never to let it happen again. However, when I ask people if they’ve backed up their data I often get blank stares in return. Perhaps it is because backing up your data, while a great idea, is a little confusing to pull off. This…

Create Bootable USB Installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite

I’m using a workflow from Apple’s KB article HT201372. It works really well and doesn’t require any 3rd party scripts. You will need to download the installer for either Yosemite or Mavericks from the AppStore. If you have already installed yours you can download another copy by looking in your Purchases. If it is currently on your HD, you can dump it and install the latest by going to Macintosh HD and looking in the /Applications folder. This is different than your user ~/Applications folder. Once you…

Apple brings many management features that makes these devices much easier to manage. You can find out more here: https://www.apple.com/education/it/dep/. If you still have the need to create an iTunes account for yourself or for your institution, the video…
